How to Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal

Broken garbage disposals are one of the more common appliance repairs in American kitchens today. Garbage disposal tend to be one of the most used and abused appliances in the kitchen. Due to the nature of a garbage disposal's job they are more prone to repairs and replacement. Any machine that spends its life grinding debris into smithereens will eventually break.

The good news is with minor maintenance and some easy repairs most garbage disposal's can be kept running for several years.

Keeping grease out of your disposal would be preferred. However, if you accumulate grease in your disposal you should use a heavy-duty degreaser periodically to keep it clean.

Inside your garbage disposal there are chopping blades that rotate independently. These must be able to spin freely for the garbage disposal to operate. These blades are the most common to get stuck or jammed. To free the chopping blades take two wooden broom handles. With the broom bristles facing up the wooden poles into the disposal crisscrossing like an X. Then rotate the handle simultaneously using leverage to free the stuck grinder blades.
